Has ROLLING STONE Lost It's Collective MIND??

As a Letter Carrier, I see a lot of magazine covers cross my line of vision. Today, I was absolutely puzzled by the latest ROLLING STONE magazine. Periodically, Rolling Stone will compile their "Top 100" list of this or that. This month, we are treated to the "Top 100 Singers of All Time". There were a few different covers, featuring some of their picks. Now, to be fair, I don't believe that Rolling Stone was completely responsible for their picks, as there may have been musicians involved in the voting process. BUT, regardless of WHO voted for these singers, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD VOTE FOR BOB DYLAN AS ONE OF THE GREATEST SINGERS OF ALL TIME???

Now, before you all go crazy with argumentative comments, please note that I wholeheartedly respect Bob Dylan's songwriting talents. I don't even mind listening to his early work, but BEST SINGER???

One thing that I have noticed with Rolling Stone, is their obvious biases towards certain artists. I am convinced that if Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young were to somehow convert the audio portion of a flatulent riddled bowel movement (forgive the mental image) into a digital audio file, and release it as an album, that Rolling Stone would give it a 4 star review. I just don't understand it. Especially when there are so many great singers out there... many of which were probably not even mentioned on the list.

I was happy to see Aretha Franklin on one of the covers. She DESERVES a cover spot. She has one of the most powerful voices in contemporary music, and I would totally concur with that assessment. Another cover features John Lennon. AGAIN, another artists that I totally respect. A great artist... but NOT one of the best singers of all time.

So, musicians... Rolling Stone contributors... whomever is responsible for the voting process in your "TOP 100" lists, PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy, STOP VOTING FOR YOUR FAVORITE ARTISTS IN CATEGORIES WHERE THEY DON'T BELONG!! If you want a Top 100 Songwriters of All Time list, by all means, put DYLAN, SPRINGSTEEN, LENNON and even YOUNG on that list, because that is where they belong!

Okay, I'm putting my soap box away.... for now.

Two things drive me bananas: 1) Lists published by music magazines, especially Blender; and 2) Music magazine covers. So I can see why this whole thing got your musical goat.

I agree with what you said. I dunno what they were thinking.

The content of the article aside, one thing that has continually bugged me about Rolling Stone is that any female singer appearing on the cover is required to be in her underwear or otherwise sexed-up. I'll admit, it was cute in 1981 to see the Go-Gos on the cover in their undies. But after more than 25 years of objectification, can we please cut it out now???
