Chris Thile and Bryan Sutton: THE MARATHON

Wow. I am STILL trying to wrap my mind around this 21 minute marathon of acoustic music. I have been a fan of NICKEL CREEK for nearly a decade, first falling in love with their music, back in 2001. BRYAN SUTTON is a name that has popped up on several Bluegrass recordings I've owned over the past 8 years, and I have loved his work enough to get one of his solo albums... but discovering these videos of CHRIS THILE (formerly of NICKEL CREEK) and BRYAN SUTTON playing TOGETHER...well, this adds an entirely new dimension to their sound.

Briefly, let me talk about these two outstanding musicians. Chris Thile was a member of the experimental Bluegrass/Americana group NICKEL CREEK. The band consisted of siblings Sean and Sara Watkins (Sara has just released her first solo album, so if you are interested, pick it up!) and Chris Thile. They began playing together as teenagers, after meeting when Chris was 8 years old. Their first album was released when Chris was the tender age of 13, his first solo album following, at the tender age of 14. The band released their breakthrough eponymous album back in 2000. Over the years, the band became more and more experimental with their sound, and by 2005 (the year of their final album), they were firmly planted outside of mainstream Bluegrass, and creating sounds unique to their band. After several side projects, including Thile working with legendary artists like Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Glen Phillips (of Toad the Wet Sprocket)...the latter, an actual album release under the name MUTUAL ADMIRATION SOCIETY, featuring the three Nickel Creek members and Glen Phillips, who...well...mutually admired each others' work...whoa, I lost my train of thought...anyhow, after these projects, the band decided to indefinitely (for now) break up, and pursue their solo careers. Chris Thile has been busy doing that. These following videos are evidence of that...

Bryan Sutton has also performed with legendary musicians, after coming to prominence with Ricky Skaggs' band, KENTUCKY THUNDER. He has also toured with The Dixie Chicks, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, among others... all heavyweights, in the world of Bluegrass/Americana music.

So now, sit back... buckle up...and enjoy CHRIS THILE and BRYAN SUTTON, having an acoustic showdown...
