Favorite Albums of My Life: 1967

After making a Facebook status update about how much I love Santana's Abraxas (I posted it as my favorite album of 1970), I decided that it would be fun to list my top 3 favorite albums of each year that I have been alive.

I was born in 1967, during the Summer of Love, so this is a good place to start...

5. THE VELVET UNDERGROUND w/ NICO

This eccentric work of art (produced by the legendary Andy Warhol) was cutting edge for it's time. Heck, it was cutting edge for ANY time.

4. PINK FLOYD: PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN

This wonderful Psychedelic masterpiece was the debut of Pink Floyd, and the brain child of Syd Barrett, the original vocalist who was asked to leave the band, following the release of this album. This album was one of the finest examples of true Psychedelic music.

3. THE BEATLES: SGT. PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND

Admittedly, this album is one that is fairly new to my collection. I have known most of the music for the better part of my life, but haven't actually heard it in context. I find it to be a truly great album, but must rank it number 3, because of my love for the top 2 albums.

2. JEFFERSON AIRPLANE: SURREALISTIC PILLOW

Featuring some of their biggest (early) hits, this album is one of my favorites from start to finish. From the classic anthem "White Rabbit" (based on Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland") to the incredibly good instrumental, "Embryonic Journey", this album is a classic in the world of Psychedelia.

1. THE MOODY BLUES: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

This album has been one of my favorites for 25 years, and considered to be one of my favorite 60's albums of all time... if not my absolute favorite. A collaboration with the London Festival Orchestra, this concept album takes you on a symphonic journey through the course of a day. The culmination is the immortal, "Nights in White Satin". This album was extremely inventive upon it's release, and has stood the test of time.

Ouch! Not even honorable mention for Are You Experienced? ;-)
By the way, if you happen to notice me blogging about the same thing, don't misunderstand; the idea will have absolutely been completely stolen from you. :-)
