VIDEO O' THE WEEK: THE FARMERS' BOYS!

This Video o' the Week is a video for a song that I love. Growing up, I really fell deep into the New Wave music that permeated the radio underground, during the early 80's. One of the bands that completely eluded the Salt Lake City radio scene, was a band called, THE FARMER'S BOYS. The band was a UK act, and may have had success there, but they can't even be considered a "one hit wonder" in the US of A.

I don't know where I first discovered The Farmers' Boys, but it was probably on one of the VHS compilations that my friend, Kim, had put together. He and I would record our favorite videos from MTV, and all the other assorted music video programs. MTV used to have a couple shows, one called "LONDON CALLING", and another called "IRS RECORDS: THE CUTTING EDGE", hosted by Peter Zaremba, of THE FLESHTONES. Both programs featured New Wave music. I can only assume that the following video was on the "London Calling" program. Either that, or it was simply a late night MTV video pick. Regardless, I loved the song so much, that I sought out the LP at our local underground Indie music/book/hemp shop, THE COSMIC AEROPLANE. A great album, and one even with a major label release (EMI). Funny they didn't go anywhere in the US.

So, without furthur adue...

THE FARMERS' BOYS with "IN THE COUNTRY"

p.s. Do you think their lack of stateside success may have something to do with the overall theme? FARMERS' Boys....In the COUNTRY? It may have scared the New Wavers right away, just by the title of band AND song. Just a thought...

WOW! My hubby used to put that tune on almost every mixtape he made back in the late '80s - early '90s. It's a great song!!!

The hubby also used to religiously record "Subterrenean" on MTV to find cool new bands.

Hello, Kate's aforementioned "hubby" here. I agree...what a great, unsung album. Full of great songs! Can't believe it's never been officially reissued on CD. I got my vinyl copy at Record Swap in Champaign, IL...a goldmine for alternative music in the mid-80s!
