RITZ Video o' the Day: BIG PIG

Undoubtedly, the title of this post has thrown you for a loop, so allow me to explain.

Back in the latter half of the decade of extravagance known as the 1980's, there was a dance club in Salt Lake City that was devoted to two things. First, it catered to a crowd of younger people and did NOT serve alcohol or allow smoking (that I recall). Second, it played some of the greatest underground dance music of the decade. Artists like New Order, Depeche Mode, Blancmange, Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five, Vicious Pink and Divine. One thing that you could count on... if there was a song with a synthetic cowbell thrown into the mix, it was probably played at The Ritz.

Although there is no longer dancing at The Ritz, the landmark bowling pin sign still illuminates South State Street, in Salt Lake City.

Last year, they held the first Ritz Club Reunion. It was held in the basement of another local club (Bricks), and was nothing short of a riot. Although the dungeon that housed this event was (in no exaggeration) over 110 degrees, it featured the funnest mix of 80's dance music that I have heard... since... well...1989.

Because of the success of the event, those that planned the 2009 event have taken it one step further. This year, they have rented out The Depot, one of the finest, upscale clubs in Salt Lake. A club normally reserved for rather well known musical acts. This will allow the party-goers to enjoy beverages of all sorts, as well as a little extra space. Oh, and did I mention air conditioning?

Anyhow, to commemorate this wonderful event that my lovely wife and I have been looking forward to (for the last year, truth be told), I have decided to post a daily video featuring one of the classic songs that you would have heard at The Ritz.

Today's video is from the Australian "one hit wonder" BIG PIG. This is a dance remix of their hit song, "I CAN'T BREAKAWAY". Enjoy...
