The Indie music scene really sneaked up on me over the last five years, reaching an absolute apex back in 2011-2012. One of my favorite albums to cross my path over those last few years was the album, "PLANS", by DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE. Since then, I have explored the many different sides of Ben Gibbard (DCFC front man and chief songwriter) including the record he did with Jay Farrar (of Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo fame) which was featured as the soundtrack of a Big Sur/Jack Kerouac documentary - the dvd which is included in the vinyl version of the Gibbard/Farrar LP) as well as the soundtrack he did for the independent Kurt Cobain documentary, "ABOUT A SON", a visually stunning tour of the greater Seattle area, accompanied by audio tape snippets of Kurt Cobain discussing his life growing up in Washington, in addition to other aspects of his career.
The following is his complete in-studio performance on Seattle's KEXP (my second favorite radio station that this country has to offer) last October, featuring music from his recently released solo album, "FORMER LIVES". Enjoy not only the song, but his stories detailing the embryonic process of this album.
