Uncle Zeke's Top 20 o' 2013: #6- THE BOXER REBELLION: "Promises"

#6: THE BOXER REBELLION- "Promises"

Number 6 on my Top 20 of 2013 list goes to THE BOXER REBELLION, a London based band that features Nashville native, Nathan Nicholson, on vocals. "Promises", the fourth full length release, was released in May, 2013. The one consistency with this band is consistency. While the music, itself, doesn't stray much from their original sounding formula, each album is strong from start to finish. "Promises" is no exception.

I first discovered The Boxer Rebellion on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" podcast, way back in 2009 or 2010. I will never forget how absolutely blown away I was by the energy that these lads evoked. Staccato laden guitar riffs (courtesy of Andrew Smith) layered upon the throbbing rhythm section of Adam Harrison (bass guitar) and Piers Hewitt (drums) create an intensity that ebbs and flows on a sea of melody.

Why this band is not a household name is beyond me. Stylistically, they might be compared to piano based Pop bands like Coldplay and Keane, but they are in a league all their own. Keyboards are at a minimum with this band, while the guitar takes center stage... powering some of the catchiest melodies that I have heard in years.

The following is the first track from "Promises"... a little ditty called "Diamonds". Check it out.

"Keep Moving", also from Promises

And a little bonus live footage...
